Rukia reminisces about her past as a member of the 13th division. As she was able to get into the Gotei 13 due to being part of the Kuchiki clan, she was disliked by others, but she was able to make a deep friendship with then-lieutenant Kaien Shiba. One night, however, a hollow merged with Kaien and attempted to kill Rukia. Kaien regained control, and impaled himself on Rukia's zanpakuto. Rukia, thinking of herself as a coward who killed Kaien, is thus convinced that she should be executed.
