Uryu and Orihime continue towards Rukia's location, but are accosted by Makizo Aramaki. Some 12th division members arrive to help, but Mayuri Kurotsuchi, who made them into human bombs, attempts to detonate them. Orihime's powers protect them, and Mayuri expresses his wish to experiment on Orihime. Uryu engages Mayuri, but is quickly disabled by his zanpakuto shikai when his lieutenant, Nemu Kurotsuchi, uses her body to hold down Uryu. Mayuri then reveals that he has experimented on many Quincy, including Uryu's grandfather, Soken Ishida, and was responsible for his death. An enraged Uryu rises to fight.
