Ashido's attack on Rukia is revealed to have been a simple test of her strength, and he decides to take her back to her friends. Along the way, he chooses to reveal both his face and past to Rukia, explaining how he came to be here. Shortly after, they are attacked by an adjuchas-class Menos, who in turns commands legions of gillians. Meanwhile, Nel and her friends are held captive by the other adjuchas, while Ichigo and his friends try to track them down. Theatrical attempts to use Nel's arrancar status as a bargaining chip fail. Though Ashido and Rukia easily destroy the first adjuchas, another sets up an ambush, then Ashido is injured while trying to protect Rukia.
