In Hueco Mundo, the hollow Grand Fisher transforms into an imperfect arrancar and makes his way to the human world. Meanwhile, Shinji Hirako enrolls at Ichigo's school. During a routine hollow purification, Ichigo is confronted by Shinji, who shows that he can willingly produce a hollow mask just like Ichigo has done unconsciously on occasion. He asks Ichigo to join his group: the vizard. At the same time, Kon (inhabiting Ichigo's body) is attacked by Grand Fisher and Uryu is attacked by another imperfect arrancar. Uryu is rescued by his father, who reveals himself to be a Quincy, while Kon remains helpless against Grand Fisher.
